When asked about my favourite plants, I come up with answers similar to what they would have been 40 years ago. The jacaranda is a pretty conventional, guileless choice. While my father drove his Dodge truck around suburbs near Earlwood delivering boxes of green groceries, I'd sit up in the passenger's seat – probably without a seatbelt – pre-occupied with counting purple canopies. Maths became my best subject.
